Read on for 10 quick and easy cleanups that will prepare your home for unexpected guests in no time at all.
Create a welcome entry
The trick for quick "emergency" cleaning is to prioritize and focus on the things that your guests will notice. Your entry is the first impression of your home, but you will probably only be in this area when you greet and fire your guests.
Here, you just have to make the space decent at a glance. There is no need to spend time vacuuming or dusting each corner. Just give your interior and exterior rugs a good shake and save the mess that has accumulated here.
Make space
You will also want to leave room for your guests' items. If you can, free hooks or hangers on the coat rack and if your home requires it, make space near the front door for guests to leave their shoes.
You should also create an obvious space for guests to leave their bags or keys. Clear a surface near the entrance or the housing area that will not block the walkways or dirty the place where it will meet.
Surface sweep
After you have cleaned a surface for your guests' items, you should move around the rest of their living areas and sweep their coffee table, side tables, TV console and any other surface. If you are too stretched to keep things in place, then walk with a basket of clothes that can hold things temporarily.
Quick cleaning is to make things look tidy, not in the organization, so you can try to sort out the mess later if there is time. Once the surfaces are clear, spray and wipe quickly with a microfiber cloth and a universal cleaner.
Clean the bathroom
Cleaning your bathroom is a step you won't want to miss if you expect company. Guests will feel very uncomfortable if the mess and dirt from the daily use of the bathroom is visible.
Cool the toilet bowl again with a quick wash (a pinch of SuperScrub and a quick scrub should be the trick) and clean the sink, surfaces and faucet. Also, change hand towels and place a roll of spare toilet paper in an easily accessible place.
Collect lint and dust
It is not necessary to make a complete vacuum, but it is worth walking around your house, particularly in high traffic areas, to collect any visible accumulation of dirt and dust.
Vacuum or sweep these stains with a microfiber mop and clean dirty floor stains if you have time. Go on your couch and throw pillows with a lint roller to collect pet hair.
Wash the dishes
A sink full of dirty dishes will make your kitchen look messy, even if the rest is spotless. Put them in the dishwasher or wash them quickly and let them dry on the rack.
If you are desperate (and do not plan to use the oven for baking), place large items such as pots and pans or anything that does not have time to wash in the oven. It's about clearing things up so that your home looks presentable. Don't forget to take them out and wash them later!
Smell the refrigerator
While in the kitchen, open your refrigerator and check for unpleasant odors. There is nothing more unpleasant than a stench in the refrigerator, especially if you are about to share a meal! Take the time to get rid of anything after its expiration date.
Throw trash
While your nose is looking for stink, check your containers. Take them out if there is an unpleasant smell or even if they are close to being full. It is better to do it now than when you have visitors.
Keep the air fresh
When cleaning, avoid bleach or bleach. These chemicals not only emit an unpleasant smell, but they are also not healthy. Chloroform is commonly released as a chlorine smoke, which is related to respiratory damage and eye irritation. Instead, clean with natural products scented with pure organic essential oils that do not contain harmful chemicals.
Also avoid spraying air fresheners. Air fresheners contain mixtures of fragrances that do not require the disclosure of ingredient lists. This is due to a gap that defines "perfume" or "fragrance" as "trade secret" designed to protect product formulations. Some common ingredients in fragrances are phthalates and synthetic musks, and studies conducted by the EWG show that they have properties that alter hormones. Open the windows if the weather permits and let fresh air into your home.
Last touches
If you have time, make an extra effort with a quick finishing touch that will make your home feel even more cozy. Light a candle with a natural aroma, sponge the pillows and buy some flowers.
Don't forget that your guests will not visit you to criticize your home, so take time to feel relaxed and ready to spend quality time with your guests.
